LEVETT, Kenneth Gordon

No.1222795, Aircraftsman 1, Kenneth Gordon LEVETT
Aged 22

Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve
Died of Illness on Saturday, 3rd October 1942

This is believed to be his medal ribbon.

Born on 25th August 1920 (Plomesgate Q3-1920 4A:2186), son of Harry S and Annie L. LEVETT (née HARMAN) of Saxon Street. They had married in 1919 in Steyning, Sussex.

In the 1939 register he was a butcher's assistant, living at Saxon Street with his father Harry S LEVETT [6-5-1892] a blacksmith; his mother Annie L [8-11-1898] and brother Cyril D [21-8-1922] a laundry van boy.

Presumably he was stationed at R.A.F Shaibah, near Basra. RAF Shaibah was a small and primitive base in the desert with a harsh hot and humid climate. It expanded during the Second World War, having at one stage 244 Squadron resident. Very little seems to be known of the war in that area, apart from accounts of the attempts of Iraqis to take RAF Habbaniyah in 1941 during the Rashid Ali rebellion.

The Bury Free Press of 17th October 1942 reported:-

Kenneth Levett is buried in Basra War Cemetery - grave 7:J:4
